As the Engineering Manager for Etsy's Web Performance Team, I led a distributed group of senior and staff-level performance engineers, focusing on site performance optimization and internal observability maintenance. My role involved championing and advocating for performance investment across the engineering organization through cross-functional collaboration with teams in product, design, and platform. As a Senior Engineering Manager I was responsible for coordinating and directing multiple teams of distributed engineers within Banno's browser-based products. The scope of each team ranged from API-drive node.js and scala backends to component-driven javascript frontends.

In my role as Engineering Manager for the Node.js Team, I helped hire a new team of five distributed Node.js engineers, and facilitated new processes and productivity workflows. The team was responsible for organizing and maintaining business-critical services including authentication, API access, and custom integrations between financial institutions. I worked directly with the head of engineering to forecast and resource projects, often running in parallel. Along with my standard responsibilities, I also advocated for cultural initiatives that aimed to improve team transparency and engineering documentation.

In this role, I acted as a multi-disciplinary engineering resource who could be quickly onboarded onto teams to meet mission critical goals, mentor junior and senior engineers, and help construct achievable roadmaps. I was the sole engineering lead, or had significant input, on many projects including a framework-agnostic web component library, multiple documentation site automation builds, and high-touch editorial publishing tools.

Using the experience gained as a Senior Frontend Engineer, I advocated for, and was tasked with creating, a team dedicated to optimizing Vox Media sites' load performance. I recruited and hired two performance engineers, and our team was able to reduce load times by up to 75% through innovative server and client-side optimizations.

As director, I was responsible for the managing all of Vox's Frontend Engineers. I helped shepherd frontend initiatives across multiple teams, and worked with team leads to accurately estimate and communicate roadmaps directly to the VP of Engineering and CTO.

My first responsibility as a Senior frontend engineer was to plan, develop, and launch Vox Media's first responsive website: polygon.com. After a successful launch, I helped to scale the new responsive approach across Vox's legacy sites and introduced a standardized front-end style and syntax guide for all frontend engineers to follow.

Responsible for planing and developing Vox's first non-sports-related website: theverge.com. During this initiative, I helped introduce several new tools to our front-end build chain, such as SASS, Grunt, and post-processing CSS optimizations.
