This role effectively meant being the editor of the newspaper and so also involves liaising with other areas of the production of newspaper (sports desk, advertising, production team and so on) to ensure the paper got to press on time.• Post additionally involves managing reporter holidays, timesheets, being a ‘face’ for the organisation in the community, managing the newspapers’ websites and social media platforms and awareness of budgeting with regard to freelance cover. This role required many of the same skills as the reporter and news editor posts (which I still maintained to an extent while also operating in the new post) with the additional responsibility of dealing with complaints made against the newspaper and individuals; acting as the public face of the organisation and the responsibilities that entails; and liaising with upper management of the organisation to ensure the newspapers were as best resourced at a time of cutting costs.
