Undergraduate Lab and Field Technician October 2020-Present● Member of the Höök Lab of Fish Ecology in Purdue’s Forestry and Natural Resources Department ● Assisted an M.S. candidate with research activities October 2020-May 2021- Responsibilities included dissecting larval fish for diet analysis, genetic analysis, and otolith extraction then using ImageJ software to measure larvae and diet item lengths for mass calculations ● Assisted Ph. D. candidates with research activities June 2021-Present- Responsibilities included subsampling and sample picking for larval fish. Samples were stored for later processing. Juvenile samples were dissected for diet and otolith analysis while tissue and sample remains were dried and weighed for later energy calculations. - Assisted with field sampling in Lake Michigan. Neuston and Bongo nets were used for larval fish sampling. Secchi Disk, Sonde, and UV Barometer Sensors were used for water quality measurements. - Experience with piloting, trailering, and launching Jon boats and larger vessels (20 ft and larger)- Overwater navigation - YSI sensor use and temperature and dissolved oxygen sensor maintenance - Research gained for dissertations includes biotic and abiotic samples from Lake Michigan, drowned river mouth lakes, and smaller inland lakes.Independent Research Project August 2021- May 2022● Stable isotope analysis of otolith core samples to determine individual fish natal habitat. Comparing natal habitats to the strength of year class to determine if natal habitat utilization has an impact on year class recruitment strength.● Skills and techniques used and learned included isometric saw usage and maintenance, otolith sanding and polishing, epoxy work, isotopic sample prep, abstract writing, SOP writing, independent work, and team collaboration.
