I grew up in the 1970s and '80s watching my father read the evening paper, and I sensed early on that journalism was important to him -- and to me. In 1992, I landed an internship at the venerable Birmingham News (though Salisbury had noted it was a fence-sitter during the 1963 events in Birmingham), and later worked for another Alabama newspaper, the Mobile Press-Register, as the second person to hold the environment beat. I later joined The Associated Press in Baltimore, Md., then edited the alumni magazine at the University of Maryland before joining E&E News in 2003.In 18 years, I have edited two E&E News publications and reported for three. All presented unique opportunites and challenges, the culmination of which is a deep and diverse archive of stories. With POLITICO'S aquisition of E&E News in January 2021, I remained in my role as the climate adaptation & resilience beat reporter for E&E's Climatewire. I'm proud of my long tenure as an environmental journalist and have witnessed the field evolve over two-plus decades. I believe human persistence, adaptation and resiience against transformational changes -- environmental, social, economic and political -- are the defining themes of the 21st century.I am married to Sarah Cusick, an associate professor of global health and nutrition at the Univesity of Minnesota. We have three children and live in Minneapolis, Minn., where I spend winters mostly indoors and summers mostly outdoors. My interests include reading, bicycling, and heart-bruising Minnesota sports teams. I watched the Twins win the World Series in 1987 and 1991. Still waiting on the Vikings. Hope springs eternal.
