I am researching the solute effects on solid-liquid phase equilibria in Al-based alloys for additive manufacturing applications. During these processes, dendrites protrude from the solid-phase toward the liquid phase and have a profound effect on the overall microstructure of these alloys. I develop and analyze Molecular Dynamics atomic simulations of these solid-liquid equilibria systems in order to determine how the solid-liquid interfacial free energy and its associated anisotropy effect the growth of these dendrites. Learning this can lead to improvements in industrial alloys and provide better metals for additive manufacturing.
