Self-directed research placement in the Cape Floristic Region of South Africa. As part of a small team I designed, implemented and analysed a range of field experiments. This work included bird, game and tortoise surveys, camera trapping, fixed-point photography, vegetation surveys and track surveys. We also worked with the local farming community and local conservation organisations in order to cooperatively protect and enhance the surrounding environment.

The work I completed with Peregrini focuses on the AONB, SSSI’s and various other protected areas along the Northumberland coast. The work I have been performing for the group involved general volunteer activities such as beach and gun emplacement clean ups and invasive gorse removal along with more skilled work such as the compiling of data and information for use in infographics and maps including the identification of local flora and fauna, as well as historically significant man-made structures – most notably those constructed in response to WWII.

At Northumberland County Council I gained invaluable experience working with the ecology team within the development department. This opportunity gave me the chance to see the potential issues and difficulties that can arise when trying to balance human development with ecology.

I was part of an ongoing study conducted by WEI (Wildlife Ecological Investments) (through Operation Wallacea) into the effects of overpopulation of elephants on biodiversity in a private game reserve.Work involved various data collection from habitat surveys and game transect surveys, to bird counts across the entire reserve.
