About Daniel Griffin

I am a Senior DevOps Engineer in the Broadcast Graphics Team at the Met Office. In this role, I support the Visual Cortex software which we use for displaying broadcast-quality weather graphics for a range of customers. This involves managing the weather data that is fed into the software, updating and improving how we use Visual Cortex and supporting the presenters and other users.Prior to this, I was an Upper Atmosphere Research Scientist at the Met Office. My research involved developing the Met Office Unified Model for weather and climate. The aim was to extend the Unified Model upwards so that it can simulate the whole atmosphere up to the exobase, which will have applications in space weather forecasting.

I am an Upper Atmosphere Research Scientist at the Met Office. My research involves developing the Met Office Unified Model (UM) so that it can be extended upwards and simulate the whole atmosphere up to the exobase, which will have applications in space weather forecasting. My role has mainly involved working on the Horizon 2020 project: SWAMI (Space weather Whole Atmosphere Model and Indices) to extend the UM so that it can be merged with an existing thermosphere model: DTM (Drag Temperature Model). I began by performing a thorough assessment of the current capabilities of the UM as it is extended upwards. My main contribution to this project will be to develop the UM to solve the governing equations of fluid dynamics with a fully implicit treatment of molecular viscosity and diffusion.I have developed the UM's radiation scheme so that it includes non-local-thermodynamic-equilibrium effects on radiation. I am also running the Thermosphere/Ionosphere/Electrodynamics General Circulation Model (TIEGCM) to provide data for a Machine Learning algorithm to generate values for Joule heating from the UM. All of these other endeavours have been towards improving the outcomes of the SWAMI project.

    Postgraduate Researcher
University Of Exeter Oct 2014 - Oct 2018

Ph.D. Candidate in the Centre for Geophysical and Astrophysical Fluid Dynamics. My postgraduate research with Professor John Thuburn is on the extension of the Met Office weather and climate model dynamical core ENDGame into the thermosphere.Currently, ENDGame is able to simulate the atmosphere and remain stable with a top boundary at ~100km. However, the simulation does not currently remain stable if the top boundary is lifted higher than this. This is due to numerical methods generating an excessive imbalance in the troposphere, and distorting the vertical propagation of waves into the thermosphere [Griffin and Thuburn, 2017]. However, it is also found that including the physical process of molecular viscosity and diffusion may prevent the excessive growth of waves in the thermosphere, which could improve ENDGame's stability as it is extended into a whole-atmosphere model. The short timescale of molecular viscosity and diffusion in the thermosphere demanded an implicit treatment, coupled with the semi-implicit treatment of the dynamics. Treating the molecular viscosity and diffusion in this way was a non-trivial mathematical problem which required the development of a novel numerical solver to solve the coupled system efficiently. It turns out that in a 1D column version of ENDGame, realistic molecular viscosity and diffusion and a modest amount of artificial damping are sufficient to control wave amplitudes and to stabilise the model up to altitudes of 600km. Results in 3D are currently being produced and are forthcoming.D. J. Griffin, J. Thuburn. 2018.
