Recently my New Year’s commitment was to research and understand the viewpoints of people who see the world differently than me. If my gut reaction was, “why would you think that?!” I knew it was time to find out. I care about knowledge. How do I know what I know, and why does everyone KNOW things with such certainty? “Curious” doesn’t cut it. I care about knowledge because I want to communicate about big ideas and the nuances of ideas. As you can imagine, this plays out in fun ways as I teach English to young Chinese kids. Every day I take what is just another lesson for the student and connect it to life. As we discussed the development of technology (in his second or third language!) my student and I joked about how people used smart phones and tablets in the past because even yesterday is technically the past. Students and their parents choose my class because I help them to speak and think in English in a way that is engaging.Though the presentation was different for college students (well yes, we still had jokes), the approach was the same when I taught their classes. I took what was just a required introduction to the New Testament course and put it in context. How does this fit into the other writings of the time? How is this a unique application of this literary genre? How does this story fit into the larger narrative of the gospel writer? Information is useless unless it is placed in a context.At the Writing Center communicating ideas was my central task. Students would come with hours of work already done researching and writing their paper. I helped them to consider how to clearly present their thesis and support it throughout their paper. My main goal was not to proofread their paper. I taught them skills for structuring and writing their paper to communicate their knowledge.
