Working with every level on the skill scale - players getting their first touches of a ball to professional footballers. I work with a great team of coaches who I have learned a lot from: maximising engagement, approaches and value of building stronger coach-athlete rapports, importance of working in a team and also a some new and inventive football drills. Breakthrough and team-training sessions are all individually planned specific to the client as they have their own unique strengths, weaknesses, roles and responsibilities within their team etc. We have to adapt to maximise productivity for the benefit of the client. Therefor the athletes fill out a self-evaluation form prior of their first session so we can plan and shape a programme to support the client achieve their goals. This side of coaching is more focussed on performance. The clients that come in are looking to ‘breakthrough’ or take their game to the next level and as coaches we are there to challenge them and encourage independent learning. Football camps are often a school holiday activity for kids aged 5-12. Usually five days long and each day is themed, the kids are learning new skills every day but the priority is that the camps are fun. This is participation coaching, we’re trying to make the kids enjoy themselves as much as possible and grow their love of the sport. ‘Fit-baw’ is a Paul Mooney Coaching’s programme that is currently in care-homes across the central belt of Scotland. The classes are practicing fundamental movements with a ball. It’s such a unique experience and I’ve learned a lot about people living with Dementia. Not losing the dressing room can be a challenge but great music and terrible banter are necessary. These classes are usually 60+ with our oldest client being 102! Show less

Summer Camp Counselor

In a small team of seven of counsellors from around the world to counsel twenty-eight 15 year old boys. I learned so much from this group. I quickly had to become a role-model and learn the best ways to manage and control a large group. The days were long, each day started at 7 and often wouldn’t get to bed until midnight. I learned so much from this group. I quickly had to become a role-model and learn the best ways to manage and control a large group. The days were long, each day started at 7 and often wouldn’t get to bed until midnight. Each hour of the day was something new and different and rarely got the chance to catch a breather. The weeks went so fast, as although it was hard-work it was such an enjoyable and rewarding experience. While I was at camp I couldn’t remember what my life was like outside/before camp as it is so intense and become so submerged in it all. I was hired as a ‘Soccer Specialist’. During daily activities (six fifty-minute classes a day) I would lead sessions for boys/girls (age 6-16) in drills, games and matches. I learned the value of adaptability and finding commonalities as each age/gender had different ability/intrinsic motivation. I was out of my comfort zone for the whole summer and I believe that’s the best way to grow as a person and coach. I met people that I’ll never forget and I am so grateful for my experience and all the valuable lesson’s it taught me. Show less
