Like a child, I learn by playing. When I want to learn a new skill or technology, I like to jump in and make a toy with it. After gaining some understanding, I can apply it to more challenging problems at work.Hello, my name is Daniel, and I had a problem: my "database" was a warren of folders filled with uncomfortably large .CSV files. It started as a temporary data cache, but morphed over time into a morass of overlapping, ever-changing text files containing decades of stock pricing and company financials. Of course the solution was to construct a proper relational database, but I had no experience with this, aside from some basic SQL querying.To learn about database design, I created a horse simulation game featuring racing, breeding, coat color genetics, and horrific ankle injuries. I learned the value of normalization and well thought-out constraints by designing tables to hold pedigrees, race results, and track conditions. I then took this knowledge and applied it at work to make a proper database. The time required to generate my monthly reports fell by 95%, and I saved untold stress by having fewer errors and conflicts.
