During my time studying at the University of Sunderland, I became respected for the speed at which I learned the skill of shorthand, which enables me to take notes at the same speed as someone talks. This is a particularly useful skill in the world of media and communications.The university invited me back a decade after my graduation to lecture in shorthand between October 2023 and January 2024. This was my first experience of teaching and helped me develop my leadership and oral communication skills. I departed this part-time role in January 2024 due to increased work responsibilities elsewhere.

I was then rewarded with the role of trainee reporter, which enabled me to complete my NCTJ qualifications and become a fully-qualified senior journalist. During my time with Johnston Press, I worked across the Sunderland Echo, Shields Gazette and Hartlepool Mail newspapers.Key responsibilities• Worked as a senior news and sports reporter across the Shields Gazette, Sunderland Echo and Hartlepool Mail newspapers• Covered council meetings and court hearings, including the high-profile Adam Johnson trial in 2016• Interviewed high-profile individuals from the sporting and entertainment worlds, including Alan Shearer, Sister Sledge and KT Tunstall• Produced written and video content• Live reporting from Premier League football matches• Handled telephone enquiries and newspaper sales queries from corporate customers

North East England

Between August 2013 and July 2016, I worked alongside one of the Premier League’s partners, ChyronHego, to manage player tracking software at every Premier League match played at Newcastle United’s St James’s Park and Sunderland’s Stadium of Light, with my work featured regularly on Sky Sports. This involved working in a ‘live’ pressured environment, as my work could be shown on live television at any moment without warning, and the accuracy of the statistics provided was paramount.
