About Daniel Roberts

I am a Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol senior lecturer in Electronic Engineering at The School of Computer Science and Engineering, Bangor University.I started in the role in 2016 after completing my PhD Research Degree at the School. I was the first in the school to conduct a PhD through the medium of Welsh, sponsored by the Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol, and was also successful in publishing a paper in the Welsh medium journal, Gwerddon. My thesis, entitled 'Semiconductor Devices for Generating Terahertz Radiation', looked at the dynamics and behaviors of VCSELs (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers), and in particular, looking at generating Terahertz radiation via a Dual-Wavelength VECSEL and via Four-Wave-Mixing (FWM).I have progressed this research further through Third Year Projects at the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering. I was appointed the Director of Student Engagement for the school in September 2022.I was appointed the School Liaison Officer for the School in 2019.I am also the former Director of Equality and Diversity for the School, and led the Schools successful Athena SWAN Bronze Award application which was awarded in October 2020.

Listed skills include Microsoft Word, Microsoft Office, Altera Quartus, Photonics, and 12 others.

Lecturer

School Of Computer Science And Electronic Engineering - Bangor University

I currently teach two first-year modules, and one third year module, at the School of Computer Science and Electronic Engineering, Bangor University. The two first year modules are titled 'Electrical and Electronic Principles' and 'Circuit Design (inc. Digital Logic), and the third year module is titled 'Control Systems'.The 'Electrical and Electronic Principles' module aims to introduce the main techniques of circuit analysis and demonstrate that this is a key framework of electronic engineering and to give a basic appreciation of the fundamental physics which determine the electronic properties of materials used in the electronics industry. The 'Circuit Design (inc. Digital Logic)' module aims to provide the fundamentals of analogue and digital circuit analysis and design based on discrete devices to prepare learners for the Analogue Electronics and digital modules in the second year. The third year 'Control Systems' module aims to establish the basic techniques of classical control system analysis and design for single input, single output systems, using both time domain and frequency response methods.I also supervise Third Year / Final year undergraduate projects, as well as MSc projects. In 2016/17, I also taught two second year modules at our college in Changsha, China (Bangor College China). I travelled to the campus twice a semester (teaching half a module each time) in order to teach Optoelectronics and Microelectronics 2.In December 2021 I was awarded the Certified Expert in Digital Teaching and Learning after completing the three 40-hour long courses on the Fundamentals of Digital Teaching and Learning, Designing Digital Teaching and Learning and Excellence in Digital Teaching and Learning. In July 2022, I was awarded a Bangor University Teaching Fellowship in recognition of outstanding contribution to teaching and pastoral care in the University.

Phd Researcher

School Of Electronic Engineering

I completed my PhD Research Degree at the School of Electronic Engineering at Bangor University in November of 2016.I was the first in the school to conduct a PhD through the medium of Welsh, and was also successful in publishing a paper in the Welsh medium journal, Gwerddon. My thesis looked at the dynamics and behaviors of VCSELs (Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers), and in particular, looking at generating Terahertz radiation via a Dual-Wavelength VECSEL and via Four-Wave-Mixing (FWM).The first part of my thesis looked at re-designing the current state-of-the-art dual-wavelength VECSEL, paying particular attention at significantly reducing the wavelength separation between the two wavelengths (from 58nm down to 5nm), and re-positioning the quantum-wells (QW) in order to reduce the cross absorption of the short wavelength light in the long wavelength QWs. The second part of my thesis looked at generating Terahertz radiation via the four-wave-mixing (FWM) method, utilizing the injection locking phenomena. The method utilized three lasers, whereby laser's one and two were injected into laser three, where FWM takes place. The conjugate signals generated by laser three were then injected back into laser one and two, where locking takes place. The worked looked in detail at the various behaviors of the system at varying locking rates and detuning frequencies, paying particular attention to the locking condition between the lasers. The final part of the thesis then looked at the modulation response of the FWM system.Another method of generating Terahertz radiation that I looked into was the Photomixing technique, or via a Photoconductive Antenna. Future work may look at the possibility of shining the output from the dual-wavelength laser, and the FWM system onto a photoconductive antenna in order to generate Terahertz radiation.
