Sep 2015 - Present

Medicinal Chemist

College Of Life Sciences, Dundee University

Employed as senior medicinal chemist in the Drug Discovery unit, I was lead chemist and project leader for several projects in the neglected diseases area. Specifically working in hit discovery, hit-to-lead and lead optimization chemistry, towards the design and synthesis of novel clinical candidates of kinetoplastid parasites. I significantly contributed to the team’s output and direction – allowing us to meet milestones and secure further funding from the Wellcome Trust to discover lead op series and preclinical candidates for the treatment of Leishmania and Chagas Disease. During my time at Dundee I co-wrote 9 papers, 6 as main author, and presented on our projects to various audiences, including National and International meetings. Working with the cross discipline project team at Dundee & our collaboration partners GSK we identified two novel series and compounds meeting preclinical candidate criteria, which are now progressing in pre-clinical studies.

Jun 2006 - Jul 2015

Medicinal Chemist

Newhouse, Motherwell, Glasgow

My move up to Scotland was to work at Organon’s laboratories at Newhouse, where I was involved with CNS and cardiovascular medicinal chemistry hit and lead optimization projects. I was employed as a Senior Chemist and responsible for the co-ordination of the chemistry for two high profile projects in the CNS area. My role was both as a synthesing chemist, to make novel compounds, and to support the chemistry team (of 3) – mentoring, encouraging ideas and troubleshooting synthesis issues. During my time with Organon I was also a member of the CNS new approaches (multidisciplinary) team, tasked with identifying and recommending new project ideas/enzyme targets for CNS diseases to the Organon senior management.

2000 - 2004 ~4 yrs

Medicinal Chemist

Terlings Park, Harlow, Essex

I enjoyed my time at Merck, working as part of a team on several medicinal chemistry projects at Merck’s Neuroscience research centre. This involved the design, synthesis and purification of novel organic compounds by both ‘traditional’ organic synthesis and the use of new technology & rapid analogue methods, working to incorporate high potency, selectivity, bio-availability, and good PK into target compounds.
