Graduate Research Assistant

Fitchburg, Wisconsin, Us

Worked with Phoenix to design, develop, build, and test a mobile vehicle-mounted DD fusion neutron generator to be used for explosive detection (NEMESIS) using prompt gamma neutron activation analysis (PGNAA). My work involved radiation modeling to design radiation shielding for the vehicle operator as well as all radiation protection for the public to minimize external dose exposure. I primarily designed, built, and tested a shielded NaI(Tl) scintillator array for detecting bulk simulated explosives in an outdoor simulated environment. My duties also involved designing test plans, experimental procedures, and operating software acquisition systems. The final system successfully detected simulated explosives at substantial standoff distances in short periods of time (<5 minutes).
