Daniel F. Wilhelm is President of The Harry Frank Guggenheim Foundation, a leader in creating and disseminating knowledge on violence in its many forms, including war, crime and human aggression. Guggenheim research and programs seek to illuminate the nature of, and responses to, issues of violence in the United States and around the world. Under Mr. Wilhelm’s leadership, Guggenheim has increased its focus on research with value for policymakers and practitioners, as well as scholars. It has inaugurated new efforts at public engagement, including new publication series, Capitol Hill briefings, research-and-policy convenings, and collaborations with other funders, academic institutions, and leaders in civil society. The Foundation has strengthened its international activities through support of place-based research on Africa, Asia and Latin America, and the investigation of transnational issues such as extremism, migration and genocide. The Foundation has fortified its program for African FellowsYoung African Scholars, increased partnerships with universities overseas and supported global exchanges.

Prior to his appointment at Guggenheim in 2017, Mr. Wilhelm served at the Vera Institute of Justice, a non-governmental organization working to improve systems of justice in the United States and internationally, as Senior Fellow (2015-2017); Vice President & Chief Program Officer (2007-2015); Director of Technical Assistance (2006-2007); and Director of the State Sentencing & Corrections Program (2001-2006). As Chief Program Officer, he was responsible for developing and overseeing the Institute’s efforts on immigration, victimization, mass incarceration, racial justice, and other areas. He also supervised Vera’s Washington, D.C., office and its communications and development activities. Mr. Wilhelm joined the Institute in 2001 to work with government leaders on sentencing and corrections reform.
