I was responsible for three boys, aged 2, 7 and 9. Duties included picking them up from school, arranging play dates, making lunch and dinner, doing laundry and babysitting.

Auckland Park, Johannesburg, South Africa

I worked in the paediatric unit of Rita Henn & Partners Physical Rehabilitation Hospital for 12 months, treating in-and out patients. On weekends and public holidays we worked on a rotational basis to see inpatient adults and children. The practice follows an Outcomes Based Rehabilitation approach.My responsibilities included assessment, plan of care, treatment (individual and/or groups), patient and family education, equipment/assistive device prescription, home- / school visits and discharge planning within the trans-disciplinary team setting. Other duties included scheduling and billing of patients as well as thorough documentation of interventions. I gained much more experience within the Dysphagia field and completed the VitalStim Plus course.

Madwaleni Hospital

I completed my community service year at Madwaleni Hospital, a District Hospital in rural Eastern Cape, South Africa. I worked closely with the Physio- and Occupational Therapists, Dietician, Dentist, Doctors and Nursing staff. We managed in-and out patients and ran various clinics and groups, ranging from:- High Risk Baby Clinic- Children with Cerebral Palsy groups, based on the GMFCS (Gross Motor Function Classification System)- Children with Learning Difficulties- Breastfeeding supportWe visited the surrounding clinics and we did education and treatment for CVA, TBI, breastfeeding and Dysphagia, with the help of isiXhosa translators working with the hospital. I did various hearing screenings with the use of the Kudowave for patients with MDR Tuberculosis, as well as gained experience using a Welch Allyn portable audiometer. Further responsibilities included: Disability Grant applications, appropriate referrals to other professionals and hospitals, in-service training, keeping up to date with statistics of patients seen, and organising the annual wheelchair race with the neighbouring hospitals.Madwaleni taught me the value of transdisciplinary treatment and community living, the importance of education and prevention as well as making use of limited resources.
