Laboratory Assistants assist with, but are not limited to assisting with:Making various bacterial cultural media’s, using aseptic practices to ensure all materials are non-contaminated, setting educational labs with COVID restrictions, disinfecting surfaces between one to ensure student safety, taking inventory of lab materials and media, and properly maintaining organization in the laboratory prep area, as well as all student lab rooms.

Researching the degradation of estrogen involving three specific wastewater bacteria commonly found in Milwaukee waterways and in sewage.This was an independent research project that allowed the method development for distinguishing if a particular wastewater bacteria had the ability to metabolize and eliminate estrogenic contaminants in a controlled laboratory setting. During this experience, there were methods of creating minimal media, using extraction and filtration techniques, sterile technique for inoculation, development of handling methods, and HLPC calibration.

Conducted online research involving the E. coli levels in Milwaukee river ways and researched filtration requirements that bottled water companies have for pharmaceutical and chemical contaminants. Using Microsoft Excel, various databases, and information provided to us from other interns, this internship worked to compile data, in an organized fashion, to analyze the E. coli levels in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.
