In 2019 I took the opportunity to lead a team to advocate and prepare for Richmond Hill’s highest corporate priority - bringing a subway to Richmond Hill Centre. The Yonge North Subway Extension to Richmond Hill Centre is one of four priority subway projects identified by the Ontario Government to be delivered by Metrolinx.Richmond Hill Centre will be a world-leading urban community and employment hub built around a multi-modal subway and transit hub at the geographical centre of the Greater Toronto Area. My role:• Leading a multi-disciplinary one window approach for transit infrastructure design and engineering• Delivering an integrated and collaborative community and stakeholder planning process• Developing relationships to advance investment in transit infrastructure and city building• Marketing Richmond Hill Centre as a world-leading economic hub

In 2007 I joined the Strategic Initiatives Division and transitioned from being an environmental champion to developing strategy and implementing the vision and priorities of Richmond Hill’s City Manager. My role:• Developing a corporate Strategic Plan through innovative engagement with the community;• Championing the implementation of the Strategic Plan including communications, performance monitoring and reporting;• Developing an annual Grants Strategy to identify and pursue priority areas for grants, maintain relationships with funding agencies and promote project successes;• Securing over $30 million in new funding for Town projects; • Leading major organizational and service improvement projects as well as other strategic corporate initiatives.

In 2003, Richmond Hill underwent a reorganization and expanded their environmental focus to move forward an ‘Environment First’ agenda. My role:• Developing and implementing strategies, programs and partnerships for the stewardship of the Town’s air, water, energy and land resources;• Researching and maintaining up-to-date information on environmental trends, technologies and practices;• Leading the development of an environmental management system to demonstrate sustainable environmental practices including successful registration to the ISO 14001 International Standard;• Developing and implementing a Clean Air Plan to take action to reduce greenhouse gases from corporate operations and the Town-wide community;• Promoting sustainability to staff and community through webpage, open houses and other educational events.

In 1998, after completing a Master’s degree, Richmond Hill hired me as their first dedicated environmental professional. My role:• Implementing technical processes for the protection and enhancement of the natural and environmental features of the Town;• Providing expert guidance to all phases of the land-use planning and development process to ensure that environmental concerns were addressed;• Developing and implementing management programs and natural heritage strategies for Town-owned environmental lands, surface water systems and stormwater management facilities;• Liaising and communication to promote multi-stakeholder projects and environmental stewardship;• Maintaining a high level of fundraised, in-kind and volunteer support to enhance Town-funded environmental initiatives.

My first professional experience was in a small environmental company as the company grew into full-service laboratory and engineering services and I grew as an environmental professional. My role:• Developing and implementing procedures for analyzing and reporting on a wide range of environmental pollutants in air, water, soil and other mediums; • Managing all aspects of laboratory operations, including business development, client management, technical development, QA/QC, staff hiring/training, expansion of capabilities, inventory, data management;• Project manager for field operations, including chemical contaminant and hazardous waste sampling and consulting for air, soil and water impacts.
