Profile bio

About Daniel Spagnolo

I am a computational biologist / bioinformatics scientist interested in applying pattern recognition and machine learning techniques to elucidate biological phenomena buried in large-scale, high-dimensional, & multi-modal data. My current role is at UPMC in the Molecular & Genomic Pathology division. Here, I am the bioinformatics lead managing a team of 4. We are solely responsible for building, maintaining, testing, UX/UI, CI/CD, and support for an end-to-end bioinformatics pipeline and clinical reporting software in a high-throughput molecular pathology lab signing out 30k+ cases a year with 35 clinical offerings. Our software is used by our lab of 80+ people, as well as a large external national laboratory.I received my Ph.D. from the Joint Carnegie-Mellon University - University of Pittsburgh Program in Computational Biology. My thesis demonstrated the potential of intratumor heterogeneity and spatial statistics of solid tumors as cancer biomarkers for disease severity and progression. Inherent to this work was identifying cellular patterns from highly multiplexed immunofluorescence images. I have worked extensively in the intersection of computer sciences and life sciences, and have experience both as a team-lead, a self-sufficient scientist, and an interdisciplinary collaborator.

Listed skills include Matlab, Python, R, Machine Learning, and 14 others.
