Mobile Engineering Manager

Current

Houston, Texas, Us

I manage the Enspire Engineering Team, acquired by Empyrean in 2023, developing the Empyrean Connect platform across backend, frontend, and mobile technologies, reporting to the VP of Engineering. In addition to managing the team, I also coordinate with Product leaders, Client Services teams, Implementation Managers, ELT, and am the Engineering leader who works with clients and SSO vendors for the Connect platform.

Mar 2024 - Present

Engineering Manager, Mobile Apps And Engineering Brand Teams

Austin, Texas, Us

At BigCommerce, I was the first hire to establish a new Mobile Apps team, hired an incredible and wonderfully diverse team, and then managed. I proposed, established, and managed BigCommerce's Engineering Brand team, tasked with establishing both BigCommerce engineers and BigCommerce Engineering as industry thought leaders. I pushed BC to adopt cutting-edge technologies wherever possible, from mobile initiatives like SwiftUI and Passkeys support to organization-wide initiatives like adopting AI and a culture of innovation.

Austin, Texas, Us

Mar 2019 - Sep 2020

Senior Mobile Software Engineer

Austin, Texas, Us

May 2018 - Mar 2019

Mobile Software Architect

Mutant Soup Software

This is my personal software development brand, for any products I've built and released myself over the years. I like to think of it as "my fictional software company." The name comes from one of my drawings when I was working on my minor degree in Art.I design and develop applications for the Apple iPhone/iPad platform to sell on the iTunes App Store. I've managed these applications with unpredictable real time information that could change without prior notice. I've designed, written, and maintained a custom backend server and database (PHP, MySQL) providing real-time sync to a mobile app CoreData (originally SQLite) database. I provided quick turnaround customer support as needed. For years I wrote daily 1,000-2,000+ word summaries as part of app features list (it took a lot of time which I no longer have with day job commitments, so I evolved the features to not rely on them). I've been a complete one-man development team managing a complex app with thousands of users.

Jul 2009 - Dec 2020

Architect, Ios

Austin, Texas, Us

At Mutual Mobile, I was a team member working in an agile environment alongside other engineers, designers, QA, and project management, building mobile software for clients of all sizes. In my time there, I moved from engineer, staff engineer, senior engineer, and am now architect. My primary platform was iOS, but I also embraced overlapping and adjacent technologies such as React Native and web development. In addition to mobile, I worked on emerging technologies such as augmented reality, bots, wearables, beacons, and connected homes, to explore new technology and identify promising new opportunities. I contributed to the company's blog and developer-focused video series, helped with new business pursuits, interviewed candidates and interns, mentored, and helped in the push for diversity and inclusivity in engineering.

Nov 2012 - Apr 2018

Journalist

Self-Employed

I covered local sports for daily newspapers. Examples included high school football for various regional schools, and an NIT tournament game for the Springfield Republican, providing first hand coverage of the UMass Minutemen. One of the most exciting aspects of this time was working on deadlines. Games often finished at, around, or after the newspaper's deadline. This meant I had to write and edit the story as it unfolded in real time, with little time to revise before submission. Even with that constraint, I always wrote with the goal to tell the story of the game, rather than a simple recitation of the stats.

Oct 2010 - Dec 2012

Web Designer Ii And Mobile App Developer

Mississippi State, Ms, Us

At Mississippi State University, I was part of the Web design team in User Services in the ITS Department. In addition to front- and back-end web development, I was also the mobile app developer for both iOS and Android platforms. I worked with a small team of exceptional and dedicated developers and designers with a mission of helping Mississippi State University put its best face forward to the world. The team functions like an agency for all the colleges and departments around campus, and is responsible for design and development of website features, content management, and adapting to new technologies to keep the websites fresh and modern.

Apr 2011 - Nov 2012

Broadcasting

Mississippi State, Ms, Us

I helped produce and edit video segments as a member of a team. I produced and edited a public service announcement for broadcast. I directed a 30 minute television program that was broadcast on TV, Spring 2010. I worked as a member of a crew on Take 30, a weekly 30 minute news program broadcast on TV in Fall 2010. I produced the original show opening, and shot and produced a fun music video to capture memories of making our last episode. My jobs included producing 2 shows, technical directing, floor directing, anchoring, operating tapes and producing multiple segments 2-4 minutes in length.

Jan 2010 - Dec 2010

Sports Journalist

Mississippi State, Ms, Us

I covered local university sports for a twice-weekly college newspaper. I wrote 1 - 4 articles per week, covering men and women's basketball, football, soccer, and other sports, writing game recaps, features, news, interviews and editorial. One of the most exciting aspects of this time was working on deadlines. Games often finished at, around, or after the newspaper's deadline. This meant I had to write and edit the story as it unfolded in real time, including large rewrites after a momentum change that altered the outcome, with little time to revise before submission. Even with that constraint, I always wrote with the goal to tell the story of the game, rather than a simple recitation of the stats.I also photographed subjects for articles as needed, using my own professional equipment.

Aug 2009 - Dec 2010

Senior Software Engineer

At Webmaster I was part of the core development team of a small startup, responsible for the front-end (which is still working as of late 2017) of a custom, skinnable, web-embeddable chat conferencing software product.Because we began in the early days of the web, the technology we used evolved over time. Originally it began as a Java applet that served mainly as a standalone chat on a web page, but I later migrated new development to Flash/ActionScript for a more seamless, embedded, and media-rich experience. Our clients included the US Government, media companies, and media personalities. Our chat was used in experiences as diverse as a public conversation with CNN and President Clinton aboard Air Force One, and an event for the fans with the members of Black Sabbath during their reunion tour. (Designing a custom-skinned chat interface for Ozzy was cool!)Additional products I developed included a standalone instant messenger running on top of IRC built in Java Swing, and iPhone and iPad applications for an encrypted drive-sharing product.

Jun 1998 - Dec 2010

Inpatient Pharmacy Technician

Memphis, Tennessee, Us

At the MED I organized medication carts, prepared medications including IV, delivered meds to the floors, including daily medications and emergency meeds during patient crises, managed storeroom, inventory and billing. My job at The MED was an interim position while I waited for an opening in the IT Department.Since the MED is a regional trauma, burn trauma, ICU, and newborn ICU hospital, any day could be a stressful, humbling, or devastating experience. I wouldn't trade it for anything.
