Longwood Fellow

Senior Horticulture Manager

Naples, Florida, United States

In this position, I had the pleasure to supervise the Gardeners that oversee the display garden areas of Naples Botanical Garden. This role also supervised the Horticulture Volunteer Coordinator. My focus in this role was employee development and capacity building for the garden. We created a management outline with areas of responsibility for each gardener. Then we identified areas within the garden that still needed a staff member assigned. As one of the managers with the largest staff, I would work closely with other managers and departments to prioritize needs and delegate out projects and tasks to staff. This role taught me a lot about leading others and my own strengths and areas for improvement. I am leaving the position on a sabbatical with gratitude for all those who I worked with as I participate in the Longwood Fellows program at Longwood Gardens, Kennett Square PA.

Internship Program Lead

Naples, Florida, United States

In an effort to improve the Internship Program at Naples Botanical Garden senior team leaders designated this position onto a team member. My role was to ensure the internship program met the goals set forth by the internship program committee. Our goals were to: -Provide students with hands on experience in their area of focus-Develop a curriculum that provides interns with a diverse and inclusive experience of Naples Botanical Garden-Create long standing relationships between the students and Naples Botanical GardenTo ensure we completed these goals I developed an outline and timeline for the 12 weeks the interns would be at the garden. I coordinated the interview process between different departments that would be supervising the interns. With each of the supervisors I helped to create onboarding documents for the interns. I developed a core curriculum with weekly meetings and field trips for all the interns to ensure there was a rich learning environment of diverse experiences. The weekly meetings and field trips also helped to foster comradery among the interns so they had positive relationships with their future peers. We encouraged the interns to challenge themselves by completing a project. Those that did complete projects presented them to the entire garden staff. Those that did not do a project presented on their experience to all staff. It was a great way for the interns to get experience engaging a large audience. It was also cool to see the engagement of staff in those presentations. In a way it helped to increase our work cultures value in teaching, learning, and supporting others growth. As apart of the conclusion to the program I coordinated with our development team to organize a culmination luncheon for the interns with the donors who directly supported the internship program that year. This was a really rewarding role for me to fulfill. It was really challenging though because I had a ton of responsibility in the water gardens too!

Garden Intern

Naples, Florida, United States

This internship was my first job outside of highschool. I started the day after my graduation ceremony! This internship was very labor intensive. At the time Naples Botanical Garden didn't have the staff to pull off a robust internship program. At the beginning I spent a lot of time helping the Irrigation Technician repair irrigation breaks and dig trenches for new irrigation zones. In this year Naples Botanical Garden was completing it's second phase of expansion from it's master plan. We built three major gardens. The Water Garden, the Asia Garden, and the Florida Garden. It was amazing to get to be apart of this process. I got to meet and learn from landscape architects Ellen Goetz and Made Wijaya as they designed their gardens! I learned how to work with many garden tools and operate small gas powered equipment like string trimmers, edger's, and gas sheers. I also learned to operate riding mowers, small tractors, and skid loaders. This was also my first introduction into the water gardens. I really learned so much in this one year of my life, I was hooked! My biggest takeaway was the reality of what life is like outside of highschool and what hard work was and how rewarding it could be.

Summer Intern

Kennet Square, Pa

I embarked on a life changing journey the summer of 2015, exploring public gardens and arboretum of the Northeast, volunteering at Chanticleer Gardens, and completing a three month internship at Longwood Gardens.During my three month internship at Longwood Gardens, I rotated among different areas of the conservatory assisting some of the finest horticulturalist in the design, installation, and maintenance of some incredible displays. The highlight of this experience was working with Tim Jennings, Longwood Gardens’ Water Lily Curator. With over 15 years of experience working with water gardens, mentored by the Longwood Gardens’ original water gardener the late Patrick Nutt, Tim is a master of aquatic horticulture and display. Tim has taught me about some of the techniques Longwood utilizes in the production, maintenance, and pollination of water lilies including the amazing Giant Water Platters. While working with Tim I expressed to him my interest in educational video production. Soon thereafter I found myself a summer project. Together, with a small advising committee and a handful of amazing volunteers, we created a short infomercial that introduces water gardens and the opportunities available for learning more about them through Longwood Gardens’ Continuing Education programs. My journey was incredible and I am deeply grateful for the individuals who helped make it possible along the way.
