Teacher Leader, Instructional Coach

Current

Boston, Massachusetts, United States

Aug 2022 - Present

Director Of Field Programs, Classroom Impact

As part of a new pilot initiative I managed a team of ten Quality Coaches to increase the quality of classroom programming across four of Jumpstart's major impact cities: Atlanta, Chicago, New York, and Massachusetts. I conducted coaching and training sessions for staff both virtually and in live site visits. I collaborated with other pilot leadership to streamline supports for each city and create new systems of accountability to deepen program effectiveness, including the creation of a live online portal for staff to share resources and document progress to goals.

Aug 2018 - Jan 2019

Program Director

Boston, Ma

This position, which started at the associate level, required strategic thinking and creativity as I supported Jumpstart programming across Massachusetts and Rhode Island. I both directly managed staff and provided training and technical assistance to our affiliate partners and was tasked with representing field needs to the rest of our national network. I collaborated with other department heads to refine field resources in the areas of curriculum, staff training, and social media supports. I also contributed to the efforts of our development department by planning and coordinating aspects of Jumpstart's Read for the Record event in Boston, and, to respond to the field challenge of inadequate transportation options for our service members, I worked with the Jumpstart's Northeast Development Director to secure a series of increasing grants from Uber that alleviated members' financial strains while ensuring children had regular and timely programming. In 2017, I designed and facilitated Boston's innovative summer program, where 20 members served over 250 children, and brought in a new partnership with Horizons for Homeless Children, adding nearly 100 new children and families to our network.

Aug 2016 - Aug 2018

Site Manager

Tufts University

As Site Manager, I managed all aspects of the Jumpstart program at Tufts, a high impact AmeriCorps early education organization that recruits and trains college students and community members to bring a proven curriculum to under-served communities. In this role, I wore a variety of hats, including campus recruiter, trainer, coach, manager, community and parent liaison, compliance manager, and data collector. I expanded both community and campus partnerships, as when I reengaged Tufts' Eliot-Pearson Department of Child Study and Human Development to provide mutually beneficial initiatives and resources to participating students. When members voiced discomfort in bringing Jumpstart's English-only curriculum to preschools that instructed primarily in Chinese, I responded by developing a culturally competent workshop series that went beyond Jumpstart's provided training sequence by bringing in expert guest speakers and examining the complex history of Tufts' relationship with Boston's Chinatown, where we served. This experience led me to join Jumpstart's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council, where I created resources for our national network to better address topics like privilege and bias with members. I also worked closely with another site manager to develop a Winter Training Institute that responded to our members' needs and featured a community panel of teachers, alumni, and preschool directors; we jointly received Jumpstart's national Values Award for our efforts.

Aug 2015 - Aug 2016

Arts And Literature Contributor

Paper Droids

As a contributor for Paper Droids, an online magazine providing geek culture for women, I wrote book and movie reviews, provided commentary on issues of feminism and social justice in current artistic works, and interviewed influential members of the sci-fi community, like Jake Lloyd, who played young Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace.

Nov 2014 - Jan 2016

Communications Coordinator

Portland, Oregon Area

This role began as an internship and developed into a paid position as I expanded PST's brand through communication and marketing strategies. In this role I served as the main contact for press and distributed media to Portland stakeholders. I also created and managed online content, including writing blog posts, and managed social media content.

Nov 2014 - Nov 2015

Program Site Manager

Portland, Oregon Area

I coached, supervised and evaluated tutors across three different elementary schools as they delivered the Reading Results program to over sixty students in grades 1-3 across Portland public schools. I partnered closely with school administration and teachers to establish student enrollment, tutoring schedules, and program facilities and managed, analyzed, and reported out on student growth data.

Jan 2015 - Jul 2015

Contributing Writer

As a contributing writer for The Geek Girl Project, a site written for and managed by women, I wrote book and movie reviews and kept readers up to date on rumors and breaking news regarding science fiction book to movie adaptations.

Nov 2014 - May 2015

Kindergarten Teacher

Kona, Hawaii

I was selected as one of 5, 800 out of 48,000 applicants to serve in a national service corps committed to teaching in under-resourced communities to expand opportunities for all children. In my first year, after realizing that the kindergarten curriculum was outdated and not meant for the full-day model, I worked with another teacher to update and enhance our curriculum so that it aligned with Common Core standards. I was the Data Team Leader for my grade level and facilitated biweekly data meetings to analyze student gains and determine instructional strategies; in this role I led my grade level to exceed all of our achievement goals and top the school in student growth gains. After noticing that our school culture lacked unity, I worked with the guidance counselor to co-found a school-wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support system that included unified student expectations, school spirit activities, and defined values. In addition to being rated "Highly Effective" according to the Hawaii's Educator Effectiveness System, I took on many extracurricular responsibilities to contribute to school wide efforts. In my second year, I was selected by Teach For America to a corps member leadership team, where I provided guidance to fellow corps members, lead discussion groups and workshops, and planned community events.

Jun 2012 - May 2014

Program Associate (Americorps)

Greater Boston Area

I managed a high impact intergenerational literacy nonprofit program at an elementary school and after-school site in both Revere and Chelsea, MA. I coached over fifteen Experience Corps volunteers in our Reading Coaches and Classroom Literacy program models by conducting training, monthly meetings, and individualized observation and feedback. I collaborated with school principals, program directors, and teachers to adapt program implementation to student needs and planned and implemented literacy events.
