After a leave of absence in 2016 when I was overseas, I rejoined the VUWSA Trust as an active Trustee. I have been working on overseeing the Trust's investments.

Education Directions Ltd (ED), which I own, has been my primary employer since 1994. My current focus is on Tertiary Insight, a subscription service that provides succinct and timely information for tertiary education decision makers.Some previous projects are listed below:- executive director of Independent Tertiary Institutions (and predecessors) 2002-07;- executive director of Assn of Private Providers of English Language 2002-07;- lobbyist and consultant to NZ Assn of Private Education Providers 1996-2001;- NZQA: projects on student fee protection and trial of quality audit;- The Treasury: projects on PTE policy, vouchers and degree teaching/research links;- TEC: projects on tertiary education workforce review and environmental scan;- TEAC: analysis of submissions and PTE sector profile;- MOE: projects on services for at-risk students and private school regulatory frameworks;- ED Blog: a website providing news and views on tertiary education from 2010-2015;- acting education and training advisor for Business NZ (8 months);- advice on legislation and regulation to the Early Childhood Council;- trained and provided advice to students' associations;- ITO feasibility projects for ICT and diving industries; and- many consultancy projects for providers over funding applications, quality assurance compliance, strategic review, student/staff grievances, competitor analysis, legislative analysis.

I'm a Director of Vic Books and Cafe, a company fully owned by the VUWSA Trust, on which I have been a Trustee for many years. Vic Books and Cafe operates at two sites at Victoria University of Wellington, and online.

My specific role was to contribute expertise on government policy, strategy and workforce development. Careerforce is the trading name of Community Support Services ITO Ltd.Being on the Careerforce Board was a good learning experience, working with the organisation as it rebounded from poor financial and educational results to become a thriving organisation that much better supported the industries that it covered. It gave me a chance to practice my governance, financial and stakeholder management skills, while working alongside a good team of people.

The Trust's focus is on supporting VUWSA in managing long-term projects with the University (usually around student facilities and services), supporting VUWSA's finances and management, and overseeing Trust investments (ownership of Vic Books and an investment portfolio). The Trust has $6m in turnover and $8m in assets (including a subsidiary company).I was a Trustee since 2006 and then stepped up to Chair role. Key changes during the period included:- supporting VUWSA in a smooth transition to voluntary student membership;- completing the Campus Hub project;- creating a new long-term investment goal to support VUWSA, and a supporting investment strategy;- overseeing and investing in Vic Books' new stores; and- induction and development of new trustees.

Trust focus is on supporting VUWSA in managing long-term projects with the University (usually around student facilities and services) and overseeing Trust investments (ownership of Vicbooks and an investment portfolio). Took on Executive Trustee role in 2008, with some extra administrative responsibilities.Major achievements include: co-negotiating a new Joint Student Union Board structure with the University and a $12m contribuition to the new Campus Hub project; supporting the restructuring of VUWSA staff roles; and co-ordinating Trust policies and planning.

After running the Facebook and Twitter presence for Thorndon Fair, Wellington's iconic street far, in 2013, I took on the marketing role on the Fair Committee in 2014. We developed a new marketing plan and backed that with new collateral, communications and a co-promotional approach with stallholders (see www.thorndonfair.nz). In 2015, the marketing effort was tweaked by adding a stronger Facebook presence, improving stallholder co-promotion and incrementally improving all other areas. It's been good fun to add a strong marketing approach to what was already a very well-run event. The Fair is run as a fundraiser for my son's school. I took a break in 2016, but came back for 2017 (and haven't yet found a replacement!).

The Education Forum was an education policy advocacy organisation based in Wellington, New Zealand. The membership was drawn from all parts of the education sector - early childhood education, primary, secondary, tertiary and training, together with leaders of industry and commerce.

Primary responsibility for managing the organisation and supporting the advocacy work of separate committees of polytechnic CEOs and Council Chairs.Major management achievements were bringing the accounts under control, reviewing internal systems and services (including all staff roles), improving capability and having governance policies approved by members. Major service achievements included increasing conference registrations by 70% and creating an electronic newsletter to stakeholders. Advocacy achievements included improving the breadth and quality of advice to members, and managing relationships with stakeholders consistently. The major achievement was starting to reset the negative view of ITPs in Wellington by promoting through communications, conferences, stakeholder relations and research the positive contribution that ITPs make to NZ.Major advocacy achievements were limited due to diversity in member views, which ultimately led to members splitting into two groups in mid-2009, after which I managed the disestablishment of all ITPNZ activities, other than quality assurance (ie ITP Quality).

Member of governing board, becoming Secretary in 2006 and also Treasurer in 2007. Managed CEO's employment and review of governance policies/strategy - the latter was a major effort, updating systems from a volunteer-run era to fit the reality of the new professional organisation.

Led organisation and was media spokesperson. Main achievements were to keep the organisation operating, maintain a positive media profile for the issue of NZ becoming a republic and find a great person to replace me.

Oversaw financial and administrative issues on a part-time basis for the NZ University Students Assn (and also for APSU - Aotearoa Polytechnics Student Union - which shared the premises).Key achievements were meeting budget, supporting the integration of the two associations in the first year of sharing premises, and organising a conference for student leaders on student services management.

Key student representative, including being on Council, Academic Board, IT, LIbrary, Student Servcies and a range of other committees. CEO of the association, including acting as employer of 5 staff, overseeing finances and coordinating planning.Key achievements were negotiating fee increases down, establishment of Student Union Board with university, bringing net assets back into the black, creating the first funding agreement with Ngai Tauira (Maori students assn), creation of a paid campus activities coordinator role and doubling bar turnover.
