About David Bock

For a business to stay competitive and find success nowadays, it’s important to have cost-effective technology systems that advance strategic goals and can easily be maintained, enhanced, and scaled. As a senior-level IT leader and innovation driver, I have a history of success in orchestrating technology strategy to engineer and deliver revenue-propelling data products for the largest bookstore chain in the U.S. With expertise in digital commerce, enterprise search technology, and entertainment product data (e.g., books, video, and music), I helped my company by overseeing the planning, design, architecture, development, testing, implementation, and support of technologies used to boost retail sales of digital commerce technology.Notable successes: • Most recently as VP of Content Technology, I paved the way for Barnes & Noble (B&N) to capture 1/3 of the U.S. eBook market after leading developers to build a product database for the launch of its NOOK eReader.• I headed the team that created B&N’s “People Who Bought Also Bought” feature—a co-relational recommendations feature for website and stores—which increased sales from product pages and displays on cash register receipts. • Laying the technical foundation for a meteoric sales boost and B&N’s $77M IPO on the NYSE, I added music and video categories to our product database to expand website sales.Known for assembling and mobilizing highly functional, technically advanced digital technology teams focused on developing and implementing database systems and search engine technology that delivers a best-in-class customer shopping experience, I have a collaborative leadership style and listen to all ideas before synthesizing a solution.I’m active on LinkedIn and would enjoy connecting with you. Please feel free to reach out.

Having begun my tenure as an application developer, I progressed to roles of strategic leadership and responsibility, cumulating with my current role on the IT leadership team. Reporting directly to CIO, I help set the direction of IT technology and enterprise architecture while mobilizing a department of 50 systems developers as well as a team of database editors tasked with generating accurate, quality data and managing our audit program.Highlights of creating and maintaining product databases as primary drivers for sales and profitability include: As part of the paradigm shift in the book-selling business, I led my team to build out an eBook database system from scratch to fast-track introduction of B&N’s digital reader (NOOK) to the U.S. market. Revamping product data and search capabilities, our team facilitated online discovery and sales of books, video, music, home, office, and gifts. Focused on fueling sales, we developed a new merchandising database that connected products, which allowed customers to find more goods at a quicker rate. We also introduced primary business rules to improve website sales and profitability and later streamlined our website operation and increased merchandising opportunities. On the financial side, I saved $650K in yearly vendor costs through effective budgeting and vendor management.

2004 - Jul 2020

Director, It Development

Because of my hands-on background, I’ve had the joy of helping many team members find their professional footing. Leading by example, my teams have always taken on the tasks no one else wanted or worked in the off-hours. Even if it didn’t directly resolve problems, we all focused on sharing the burden. It gave a feeling of ownership to the entire team, especially when it came to sharing in our collective successes. Setting the foundation for B&N’s IPO success, I enabling expansion of website sales into music and video. By developing, coaching, and mentoring several next-generation business leaders within my department (e.g., technical, analytical, and leadership skills), we increased our workload and output.  I also assembled, mobilized, and scaled a top-performing team of category specialists and product experts, which was critical in improving product data and propelling sales.

At MUZE (a B2B provider of media information, metadata, and digital preview samples that enabled search, discovery, and purchase of digital entertainment content), I built a comprehensive database for an interactive retail kiosk that contains every single book for sale in the U.S. Always ready to question and double-check work, I was able to come up with broad solutions to many problems, not just one-off fixes.
