A multifaceted position including: Project manager responsible for creating work breakdown structure for resource planning and delivery schedules. Department manager of the engineering group encompassing manufacturing engineers, development design engineering staff, and the global field service engineering team. Design engineer responsible for conceptualization of specialized products and tooling and/or analytical review of the designs and implementation of others. Manufacturing engineer responsible for proper part fabrication, manufacturing build, and global service. Primary product responsibility and focus is in the high precision wafer processing equipment and tooling for our largest customer, Hitachi (HGST). Experienced with precision wafer processing and assembly for data tape drive heads, and 'sliders' for hard disk drives with process control to within 30nm.Work entails creativity, analysis, interaction, and project management within cross functional global teams to drive product evolution to aggressive schedules. Requires an advisory design roll to product design staff for manufactureable, serviceable, functionally robust, and cost effective products while leading the team though build, delivery, and global support. Business acumen as well needed to drive and manage the I.P. interface with legal counsel and USPTO for all office action and international patent activity. Further experience is garnered as the sole FDA interface for authoring and rectifying an FDA 510(k) Substantial Equivalence to clearance: K130019.

Consultant to a small start-up company by offering product development expertise, manufacturing process development with continuous improvement, project management, and business guidance in setting up controls to maximize their ROI. Through my implementation of education, minor material changes, fixturing and consistent manufacturing processes, I increased first-pass yield from ~45% to over 90%. Through continuous improvement PCB redesign, first pass yield increased again to over 99%, and productivity increased to over 4X previous levels with less employees.With the products unchanged since my redesign, the company just received one of two Presidents "E" awards issued to companies in Arizona from Washington D.C. in June of 2016 for contributions to Export Commerce, with the product now in 39 countries.

Manufacturing engineer (Early Manufacturing Involvement) responsible for new product launch of tape drives, drive libraries and automation, and 'virtual tape' system products. The largest being the most expensive for IBM-Tucson to date with $1.8 Million (parts cost) in early manufacturing build delivery. Secondary product engineering support was with end-of-life component evaluation for enhanced or continuing product life with engineering change components. Work entailed interaction within cross functional project teams to drive product release to schedule. Performed advisory design coaching roll to product design staff for manufactureable, serviceable, functionally robust, and cost effective products. Also included was the initial writing of the Manufacturing Process Instructions (MPI's), and training of the manufacturing engineer and assembly staff at the off-shore assembly facility.Mechanical design engineer responsible for product and tooling design to support product. Product included tape drives, drive libraries and automation, printers and copiers, and optical disk drives. Tooling included thin film ceramic substrate slicing, dicing, and assembly fixtures for digital tape head module machining and lapping, and for module to device assembly. Assembly was held consistently within 3 microns in 2 planes, 3 light bands within the 3rd plane.

* Mechanical design and site build of the 50,000 pound primary mirror lifting fixture, mirror coating stripping/washing cart, thermal control systems and Cassegrain instrumentation protection system.* Design and detail of assemblies and components, specified material selection and purchased components, vendor delivery qualification and buy-off, and site assembly and qualification for usage.* Design of products using AutoCAD, monitoring schedule with MS Project, usage of heavy equipment and cranes for site assembly of hardware, and supervision of construction crews during assembly.Earlier engineering positions have been in the design of high speed mail sorting/processing machines, missile system test equipment, consumer electronics packaging, automated assembly and test equipment for the automotive machine tool industry, injection molded plastic part and mold design, dry press tooling for ceramic substrates, build and test machinery for ceramic capacitors, and specialized reusable aluminum molds for cast lead shielding components for the nuclear power industry.
