The company was literally the big internet "experiment", taking a business that started out of someone's garage and eventually turning it into one of the largest level-3 national internet highways, complete with 7 NAPS and (if I remember correctly) 70+ POP sites. Internet backbone technology seemed like a wide open field that had not even made it into the textbooks yet, and Dave was on top of it all with a vast knowledge of the subject and turning those ideas into reality. One of Dave's greatest assets was in being a great politician and promoter (as a CTO should be), and pulled off the impossible. He arranged "private peering" agreements for the internet traffic that passed between our company and the rest of the big backbone providers, including Worldcom. These arrangements were unheard of in the day with a company our size and should be noted in books documenting the history of the internet. Through Dave's leadership and efforts as CTO, NetRail went from being a small southeastern regional internet access provider to (at the time) one of the "top ten" tier-1 national internet backbone providers and the only "privately-held" one of those ten." and "I first worked with David was when I was at NorthPoint. David was directly responsible for providing the peering infrastructure that we built our south FL network on.
