  • University Of California, Berkeley
    Postdoctoral Research Fellow
University Of California, Berkeley Nov 2019 - Jul 2021
    Berkeley, California
Advisor: José Pablo Vázquez-MedinaI examined the role of oxidative stress in acute and chronic stress in live cells and systemically in wild elephant seals using experimental hormone elevations and receptor blockers. Using both live cells and whole organism studies, I was able to elucidate mechanistic differences between short and long-term stress in oxidative stress, immune function, and inflammation. Techniques: Tissue culture, live and fixed cell staining, real-time qPCR, fluorescence and confocal microscopy, protein expression, ELISA, enzyme activity assays, and immunohistochemsitry
  • Western Kentucky University
    Postdoctoral Researcher
Western Kentucky University Mar 2019 - Oct 2019
    Bowling Green Area, Ky
Advisor: Noah AshleyI examined the mechanistic links between sleep loss, blood pressure, and inflammation using C57BL/6 mice, osmotic pumps, and sleep fragmentation. I found that while the inflammatory responses were largely independent between treatments, cytokine gene expression in hippocampal and hypothalamic tissues were altered by the interaction of these treatments. This highlights potential complications between hypertension and sleep apnea, pathologies that are increasing in prevalence throughout the world.Techniques: sterile surgery techniques for implanting pumps, gross anatomy for examineing tissue and region specific effects of our treatment on RNA expression, real-time qPCR, mouse colony husbandry, and ELISAs
  • Penn State University
    Phd Student And Course Instructor
Penn State University Aug 2014 - May 2019
    State College, Pennsylvania Area
Ph.D. Advisor: Tracy LangkildeI employed a combination of behavioral, physiological, and biochemical techniques to investigate the effects of maternal stress on offspring physiology, morphology, DNA, and behavior in wild caught lizards. By elevating maternal stress hormones, I also examined impacts on mothers behavior and physiology as well as egg nutrient and hormone allocation to elucidate the trans-generational impacts of stress.Additionally, I taught lab sections as well as my own courses, Special Topics in Research and Wildlife Behavior while mentoring students in independent research.
  • Sonoma State University
    Research And Teaching Associate
Sonoma State University Aug 2012 - Jun 2014
    Rohnert Park, Ca
Advisor: Daniel CrockerUtilizing hormone challenges, I examined the impact of acute and chronic stress on hormone and metabolic concentrations in wild elephant seals and how these responses differed across life history stages. I directed Intro Biology as well as Physiology Labs and graded the students based on activity and quizzes
