Hired to start-up and manage a microdialysis and neurochemistry laboratory at Alkermes. In less than 6 months, I succesfully built the microdialysis program from ideation to fully functioning laboratory. In this position, I performed surgical techniques, in-vivo pharmacology and bioanalytical analysis.

Investigated the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in neurological disorders. Research involved investigating decreases in mitochondrial function and alterations in mitochondrial morphology in post-mortem brain tissue and peripheral cell lines from Affective Disorder (BPD, MDD, Schizophrenia) patients with an emphasis on the role of glucocorticoids in these phenomena. Additional research investigated the efficacy of transfer of healthy, isolated human mitochondria to compromised cell lines from Bipolar and Parkinson’s disease patients, as well as rotenone-treated model cells systems in order to reverse deficits in mitochondrial electron transport chain functioning.

Neuropharmacology/Neurochemistry: Nitric oxide mediated oxidative damage and depletion of the vesicular monoamine transporter 2 protein after repeated methamphetamine in rats. Additional studies were performed investigating the neuroprotective properties of cholinergic and nitric oxide synthase antagonists against the striatal dopaminergic damage produced by methamphetamine.

Behavioral Neuroscience: The inhibitory effects of NMDA glutamate receptor antagonism on cocaine self-administration behavior in rats

Performed a variety of behavioral pharmacology techniques including the forced swim test, conditioned place preference, elevated plus maze, and measures of drug-induced animal locomotion and stereotypy. Additional research experiments involved measuring stress responses in human subjects via subjective reports and electrochemical measurements.
