Since joining Ayesa, I have applied my past experience as a field engineer and engineering geologist to geotechnical design projects. My main focus of work is now geotechnical design work, carrying out design work such as slope stability analysis and retaining wall designs. I currently act as the main project manager for the HS2 projects in the Guildford office.Key responsibilities include:• Undertaking temporary works designs (predominantly) for the road and rail sectors and undertaking site visits to inspect and coordinate on temporary works designs.• Writing and reviewing geotechnical design reports, including; Basement Impact Assessments, Ground Movement Assessments, Approval in Principal reports, Network Rail FormC reports and Designer’s Risk Assessments. • Undertaking geotechnical modelling (PDISP/XDisp, GeoSlope) and foundation/piling design. • Managing small to large scale geotechnical projects, including interdisciplinary design management and financial management.• Providing high level engineering consultancy support to project directors and Clients, including attending Client meetings.• Using my background as a Chartered Geologist to mentor and upskill junior geotechnical engineer’s core geological understanding and working knowledge.

This role included duties such as chairing monthly health and safety meetings with the H&SC team and SHEQ compliance manager, preparing and co-hosting the annual ‘health and safety roadshow' (a companywide health and safety event) and providing the health and writing detailed Risk Assessment and Method Statement documents in line with industry best practice guidance.

My first industry position was as a Graduate Geo-Environmental Consultant for Resource & Environmental Consultants Limited (REC Ltd) based in their Fareham and Croydon offices. My experience in the environmental industry has covered a range of projects including; contaminated land projects, desk studies, environmental and geotechnical site investigations and risk assessment through to environmental monitoring and final validation works supervision.

Penderyn

As part of my Masters course I undertook a summer work placement working on a collaboration project between Cardiff University and the Penderyn Whiskey Distillery. My project was a full Phase I - Phase III Geo-Environmental investigation of the area surrounding the distillery site. My tasks included:- Producing a Phase I desk study of the area (including a detailed analysis of the site's history, topography, geology, hydrology and hydrogeology);- Completing an investigative geophysical survey of the area to better understand the effects of the previous glacial movements, and how it has affected the landscape;- Conducting geological mapping at the nearby Stuart quarry to assess the area's bedrock conditions and determine the predominant groundwater flow direction;- A water resource analysis study, including an approximate water balance calculation for the catchment area and a water balance calculation for the distillery's use of its aquifer conducted via a single well pump test, and; - A hydrochemical study of the stream water in the catchment.Fieldwork included: - Geological mapping and discontinuity surveys of exposed bedrock as a means of assessing groundwater movement through the region;- Resistivity geophysical surveying of an incised valley channel;- A single well pump and recovery test at the distillery to assess the properties of the underlying alluvium aquifer,and;- Field testing of water samples, followed by laboratory analysis for anions using an iso-chromatographer and ICP-MS to assess local surface waters for potential anion and cation contamination.
