Owner
Western Christian Bookstore
Oakland, Ca
After frequently visiting to the 100-year old community anchor institution since the age of 5, I was committed to preventing the oldest Christian bookstore in the nation from going out of business. With the help of Rhonda Jackson, we purchased the company from bankruptcy liquidators for $125K using savings and creative financing to aggregate cash payment due within 10 days of signing term sheet. We sold books and supplies to individuals, churches, faith-based organizations, and prisons throughout the Western United States. The following are some more highlights: - Created and implemented turn-around plan that required the closing of five of the seven stores to focus on expanding the customer base at the remaining two stores with indicators of greater growth potential. - Learned on the job and by working part-time at national chain competitor part-time for nine months, resulting in proper inventory management, bookstore operation, appropriate hiring of team members, and addition of café to store - Managed 6-15 employees to grow revenues from $500K to $1.1M by negotiating discounted rates with publishers, creating an online presence, and positioning the bookstore as a community champion with programs to feed the homeless, create safe places, and host fun family
