About David Koerner
Emeritus astronomy professor with interests in astrobiology, cultural astronomy and the arts. Past research areas included astronomical observation of the origin of stars and planets. Dr. David Koerner studied piano with Joanna Hodges and violin with Lewis Main Jr. in the Los Angeles area, where he was sought after as a performer and accompanist with positions at Long Beach Community College, the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition, and Long Beach Symphony. His awards include the Los Angeles Concerto Competition, MTNA Collegiate piano competition for the state of California, first place in the Krenek Competition, several awards from the Joanna Hodges International Piano Competition, and participation in the VIIth International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow under recommendation of Ernst Krenek and Alberto Bolet. He appeared with orchestras playing piano concertos of Beethoven, Saint-Saëns, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Brahms, Gershwin, and Poulenc. Dr. Koerner is a professional astronomer who also plays violin and viola. His degrees include B.S. Physics, M.S. and Ph.D. Planetary Science, and an M.M. degree in violin/viola instrumental performance at NAU. He is now retiring from astronomy and intends to renew a more active keyboard presence in Northern Arizona. He recently performed the Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto with Orchestra Northern Arizona.
