• Appointed by Judge after impressing him during appearances in the court as the public defender • Worked part-time—3 days/week as magistrate • Also appointed as acting judge when needed • Handled the civil docket, including forcible entry & detainer cases, small claims, & the regular civil docket, which was primarily collections cases • Handled criminal & traffic docket, including arraignments, domestic violence temporary protection hearings, change of pleas, & trials • Wrote decisions on small claims, civil trials, traffic trials, & suppressions

• Met w/ judges, reviewed files of assigned cases, performed legal research & wrote proposed decisions or legal memos on civil motions • Judge Wolfe was appointed to court of appeals in spring of 1985 • Judge Dodge appointed to replace Judge Wolfe & my duties responsibilities increased greatly because Judge Dodge valued my experience • Judge Dodge assigned me to work on criminal cases too • Sat in on trials & other hearings, & even in chambers to help decide the issues with legal research & analysis & discussions • Wrote proposed decisions & helped Judge write jury instructions

• Met with police chief & administrators to discuss legal issues, such as affirmative action & internal affairs • Reviewed official files, performed legal research & wrote legal memorandums on issues as requested by the chief & administrators

• Initially hired as temporary address clerk over Christmas holidays & retained as a permanent employee. • Worked 5 days/week, usually 3-5 hours except Christmas when we worked overtime (Under CBA, part-time employees paid time & a half for any time in excess of 5 hours/day) • Worked 6:00 pm to 11:00 pm shift for a couple years • Worked 3:00 am to 8:00 am shift for last few years • Attended undergraduate & then law school full-time while working there
