Minneapolis-born filmmaker David Mackay graduated with a B.A. in Economics from Stanford University. He worked on the American Stock Exchange and the Pacific Stock Exchange before pursuing his interest in the entertainment industry. While working toward his Masters degree at USC he took out blocks of time to crew on eight feature films, including: MYSTERY TRAIN, RUSSKIES and MY HEROES HAVE ALWAYS BEEN COWBOYS. He also spent two summers at Robert Redford’s Sundance Institute. By working as a second A.D., boom operator, grip and gaffer, Mackay supplemented his film studies with practical set experience.Mackay co-wrote and directed his thesis film, PROVIDENCE, starring Dedee and Lori Pfeiffer (Michelle’s sisters), J.D. Cullum, and Keanu Reeves in a cameo role. The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival; the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences named PROVIDENCE the best dramatic short film of 1991.With his Masters in hand, many crew credits, and a strong background in still photography, Mackay quickly rose to the rank of Director of Photography. Having worked and trained with veteran directors: Paul Mazursky, Jim Jarmusch, Stewart Rosenberg and Luis Mandoki, Mackay was well prepared for his feature directorial debut and the many movies that have followed.
