I have a background in offshore sailing and previously worked as a professional Yacht Skipper (captain) logging over 60,000 miles sailed worldwide, including a 3.5-year global circumnavigation.   I currently manage a group of meteorologists and analysts in Portland, Oregon, providing 24/7 forecast services in support of trading operations for the Avangrid Balancing Authority (BA). This BA is the largest renewable generation resource-only BA in the Western Electricity Coordinating Council (WECC), comprising more than 2,300 megawatts (MWs) of renewable generation facilities. It utilizes a combination of owned and contracted resources, hour-ahead capacity purchases, and intra-hour energy purchases, which minimizes incremental carbon emissions from balancing the wind and solar facilities. The combination of 24/7 meteorology, working together with the real-time trading desks and Avangrid’s industry leading National Control Center provides the foundation on which to build more wind, solar and eventually energy storage solutions over the coming years.
