I have practiced real estate and land use law in California and Oregon for over 25 years. I specialize in advising families and family-owned businesses on all aspects of their real estate portfolios. I enjoy helping families grow generational wealth by streamlining both the day-to-day legal management of their properties and by facilitating important transactions at the transition points of a multi-generational enterprise. I also regularly assist clients in navigating Oregon's land use permitting system. Whether a development project is large or small, common or eclectic, I can help reduce the time and expense to get it through the permitting system to construction and operation. Past projects bearing my fingerprints include big box stores, renewable energy generation facilities, utility infrastructure, auto dealerships, office buildings, parks, residential subdivisions, hotels, apartments and short-term rentals. I have been recognized as a top lawyer by Best Lawyers of America each year since 2013, and by Chambers USA since 2020, for my Real Estate, Zoning and Energy Law practices. I am currently Co-Chair of the Tonkon Torp Business Department, having previously served as chair of the Real Estate and Land Use Practice Group for nine years and of the Energy Practice Group for four years. I have served as a volunteer Court Appointed Special Advocate in Multnomah County since 2017, representing foster children in often-difficult child dependency proceedings. Each spring and summer you can find me on baseball fields around the Portland region umpiring high school baseball. In my free time I like to ski, backpack, golf and garden. I am happily married to my wife Darcy, with two adult children and our black lab Lucy to keep us on our toes.
