As a veteran STEAM teacher, I have tried to be the teacher that I never had. While this effort has been somewhat idealistic, it is balanced by the pragmatic nature of the courses I teach. In the classroom, my students are engaged through rigorous project-based learning activities that foster creativity and the application of science and math principles and the Engineering Design Process to develop solutions to problems. The major concepts that we focus on in our classroom include renewable energy and robotics.My students have been involved in numerous enrichment programs throughout my career; Technology Student Association, EV Challenge, Mission to Mars, NC DOT Bridge Competition, F1 in Schools, VEX Robotics, Sustainable Transportation Education Program (STEP), and Rogue Robotics. These enrichment programs, mostly competitive project-based learning events, provided critical motivation for them to challenge themselves in an academic arena.I have been fortunate to be a part of a multitude of curriculum projects and professional development programs that have enhanced my skills as a teacher which was leveraged to improve student learning in the classroom. These projects include The Kenan Fellows Program, National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, The TechKnow Project, Transforming Teaching through Implementing Inquiry, as well as several DPI Curriculum Projects.
