After 35 years performing FEA it was time to walk away from the engineering environment and pursue other interests.

Analysis of body stress and NVH behavior for pre-program vehicle designs. This includes optimization for mode placement and stresses in the body and frame.

Provided analysis for design development of suspension systems for a hydro-land rescue vehicle. This involved both classical hand analysis and computer simulation.

Analyzed stress and NVH behavior of developing transmission case designs. This included topology and topography optimization to guide the design process.

Performed NVH studies of powertrain systems including modal responses and radiated noise due to various internal dynamic excitations. Optimized internal transmission components based on mass, stress, deflection and radiated noise responses. These included nonlinear transient analysis of gear sets, center supports, differentials and transmission cases.

Performed modal, nonlinear and optimization analysis of powertrain systems, engine and transmission parts, and suspension components to provide design direction based on NVH response, fatigue behavior, and stress. Determined full vehicle and bumper responses to 30 m.p.h. frontal crash and federally mandated pendulum hits. Developed crush cone designs using nonlinear crash analysis for optimal energy absorption under frontal impact. Performed parametric studies to evaluate several optimization codes and tetra mesh generators. Benchmarked a series of transmission designs to develop a gearing configuration for a light truck automatic transmission. Developed a suite of problems for quality testing of the pre and post processing capabilities of HyperMesh, a finite element modeling package. The problems were designed to check prerelease versions for quality and performance capabilities with regards to Dyna3d, Nastran and Abaqus.

Analyzed stress concentrations around key slots in military vehicle parts using nonlinear part interfaces. Performed modal analysis of engine systems for the development of engine and transmission structural interfaces for optimal NVH behavior. Determined nonlinear behavior of internal transmission components using pressure and temperature loads and nonlinear material properties. Evaluated geometric and material options for development of planetary gear designs. Determined stress concentrations in clutch housings and clutch packs under centrifugal forces using P element codes.

Performed static and modal analysis of automotive body, suspension and engine parts for stress, stiffness and NVH predictions. Determined fatigue life of spot welds between sheet metal parts using strain-life methods. Developed and analyzed automotive door beam designs for side intrusion using nonlinear materials and part interfaces. Determined nonlinear behavior of automotive seat structures due to crash loading.

Analyzed automotive front end structures and body panels for modal response. Predicted frontal crash response of automotive underbody structure. Evaluated engine, chassis and suspension components for stress, stiffness and fatigue behavior. Developed software to analyze fatigue life of spot welds and sheet metal parts based on both stress-life and strain-life theories. Coordinated engineering activities for Finite Element Analysis on several large engineering projects.

Provided fatigue and fracture mechanics analysis for military vehicle parts. This included life estimates to crack initiation based on both stress-life and strain-life material properties, as well as crack growth calculations under cyclic loading. Developed and analyzed dynamic isolator systems for electrical and mechanical components to survive extreme dynamic shock environments. Coordinated engineering activities for large military vehicle design programs.

Performed static and modal response analysis of automotive components in support of several car and truck programs. Designed engine mounts taking into account both static and dynamic behavior of the powertrain system.

Designed and analyzed cable tray supports for nuclear plant reactor buildings based on frequency response analysis. Analyzed stress concentrations around the coolant system penetrations through the reactor containment structure under dynamic pipe whip loading. Determined cooling torus behavior under seismic events using direct transient response including varying internal fluid levels during the event.
