Research Assistant

Kingston, On

I conducted research in (multi-agent) observation of Discrete-Event Systems (DES). ADES is a system which contains a discrete state space and event-drivendynamics. The DES generates events which triggers changes in the state of theDES. Agents external to the DES may observe the occurrence of events generatedby the DES. However, not all occurrences of events generated by the DES may beobserved by a given agent. An event occurrence may not be observed by an agentfor the following reasons, to name a few; + the agent does not have a sensor for observing the event; + the agent has a sensor for observing the event, but the sensor is faulty or the agent chooses not to use the sensor all the time; + the event is communicated to the agent by another agent, but not all the time. The agents use their observation of event occurrences and a model of the DES toestimate the current state of the DES or the behaviour (i.e., sequence ofevents) that the DES has generated. My research concerns designing andcomputing protocols which dictate how each agent uses its event sensors and howeach agent communicates with other agents in order that each agent can estimatethe DES state or behaviour. In short, I investigate event sensing andcommunication protocols that permit each agent to know what it needs to knowabout the DES.What an agent needs to know about a DES is problem-dependant. Commonproblems are: + Estimating precisely the current state or behaviour of the DES; + Distinguishing between certain states (resp., behaviour) of the DES.Some intended applications of research in observation of DES are: + decentralized and distributed control of systems; + failure diagnosis of systems; + network communication protocol design; + system security (opacity).
