David Simpson served from 1991 to 2014 as President of the Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS). IRIS is a consortium of more than 120 US research universities that manages an NSF-funded facility program to provide instrumentation and data services to support national and global research programs in seismology. As a research seismologist at Columbia University (1974-1991) he led investigations of earthquakes on all continents, including the effect of human activity, such as the filling of large reservoirs, on earthquake generation. He has been involved in programs to monitor seismic events worldwide and discriminate between earthquakes and nuclear explosions. Dr. Simpson has been a member of the U.S. National Research Council's Committee on Seismology; the Advisory Committee for the Geoscience Directorate of the National Science Foundation, the USGS Scientific Earthquake Studies Advisory Committee; the Advisory Committee for the Earthquake Hazard Reduction Program and the Board of the Seismological Society of America. He received the Sadovsky and Schmidt medals from the Institute of Physics of the Earth of the Russian Academy of Science. In 2012 he was awarded the Waldo Smith Medal presented by the American Geophysical Union for “extraordinary service to geophysics”. He has graduate degrees from Dalhousie University, Halifax and the Australian National University, Canberra and received an honorary degree from Dalhousie University in 2014.
