Responsible for overall design, prototyping and overseeing implementation of PACS (Hospital Picture Archiving and Communication System) server software components developed by a team of 6-20 (at various stages) software developers locally within the scope of a global project staffed by several dozen developers and testers worldwide. Collaborated closely with architect counterparts as well as project and product managers in other offices as part of this global team spanning 5 major development centers in Waterloo, Gent (Belgium), Mortsel (Belgium), Vienna (Austria), Shanghai (China). Additionally acted as part-time Senior Software Developer during this time, providing analysis and implementing solutions for a variety of issues encountered by software verification and validation as well as issues encountered in the field.The Impax Agility PACS server is a clustered J2EE system, running on JBoss with an Oracle database. It is sold to hospitals and deployed within their environment where it is responsible for the management, distribution and viewing of medical images, as well as the creation of medical reports for imaging studies. Agfa Impax is installed in hundreds of hospitals worldwide.
Guided and mentored a young team through a challenging transition including successful implementation of an Agile (SCRUM) methodology.Provided design and implementation of core features for Agfa's gestational next-generation Agility PACS project.
Interleaved, and sometimes simultaneously, with other positions held at Agfa during this time, I held the position of Senior Software Developer.Much of this time was spent doing early work on the Impax Agility PACS (Impax 7) and Impax Data Center (a vendor neutral enterpise data storage solution) projects. These projects were written primarily in Java.Additional projects included design and development of a custom Oracle trigger based integration (PL/SQL and C++) with a third party system to facilitate shared workflow, maintenance of various data access libraries, and a custom US modality project (C++) as part of two person development team performing extensive adaptation and customization of DICOM interfacing software to implement new MPPS profile, and integrate and adapt DICOM SCU (sending of images). Adapted existing data access layer and surrounding logic to behave transactionally (rather than the existing autocommit behaviour).
Led Agfa's shared team of database admin and data access experts, provided company wide data modeling consultation and database expertise and personally maintained the new C# data access layer for Impax 6. Designed and implemented a migration application to transfer user profile information from the ad-hoc XML encoded structure stored within the relational database of one generation of Agfa's Impax product to the LDAP store used by the next.
Worked on a variety of healthcare applications including Impax (Agfa 's PACS), DICOM printer software and Broker/Connectivity Manager (a system and software responsible for the integration and workflow coordination of various Hospital systems). These systems were primarily written in C++. Mainly: - Connectivity Manager - a complete C++ rewrite of the Broker project, which has now fully replaced it in the field, personally designed and developed all inbound and outbound DICOM interfaces as well as the database and data storage layer (Clinical Data Store/Manager). - Broker 1.5 - wrote all inbound "DICOM RIS" interfaces - maintained all other DICOM interfaces as well as the core messaging and data storage libraries.
