About David Sutherland
I am a broadly-trained marine scientist focused on the regions where fresh water meets saltwater. These areas include 1) estuaries such as Puget Sound, Washington, Coos Bay, Oregon, and many others that are central to our human experience (and impact) on the ocean, and 2) glacial fjords in Greenland, Alaska, and Antarctica, where the ocean and ice interact, creating feedbacks we are only now discovering that influence the rate of sea level rise and global ocean circulation. From 2020 to 2022, I served as a Program Director in the Antarctic Sciences Section of the National Science Foundation, overseeing a broad portfolio (>$8M) of projects advancing knowledge on the forefront of oceanic and atmospheric sciences around the Southern Ocean. In addition, I lead the Office of Polar Program Postdoctoral Research Fellowship program, which has funded over 20 PhD level scientists engaged in polar geoscience across the nation.
