In global law firms, won professional recognition as co-leader of the cybersecurity, privacy and data protection practice as a partner in Akin Gump's Washington D.C. office and, earlier, in antitrust practice group leadership positions at another major law firm.In business, served as SVP for Law and Regulatory at a telecom services company, helped to bring it public, and led key policy, law and regulatory initiatives. Later, appointed twice by federal courts and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) to serve as Management Trustee, running competitive mobile wireless businesses in a total of 20 rural markets for six-month periods, until divested to satisfy merger consent decrees. In government, during Obama Administration, served as Chief of the Public Safety and Homeland Security Bureau at the FCC, responsible for a staff of 115 and the FCC's 24/7 Operations Center. Led the FCC's work to make people safer through reliable, resilient and secure state-of-the-art communications, including its cyber initiatives (and its work in White House-led inter-agency cyber working groups). Served as Deputy Chief of the FCC's International Bureau. During Clinton Administration, served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General for Antitrust in the U.S. Dep't of Justice (DoJ) and oversaw various U.S. and international antitrust enforcement or competition policy matters, mainly in regulated industries, and the DoJ's work on the Telecom Act of 1996. While in private sector, spent 13 years as a member of the US State Department's Advisory Committee on International Communications and Information Policy. Held TS/SCI clearances while in government.
