I have always had a love-hate relationship with computers. My mother told me that one of my first sentences was that I hated that ugly old computer. (She was teaching a computer programming class at the time and, to my way of thinking, not spending enough time with me.) I grew up playing games first on our Tandy computer and then an Apple IIc, but I was not enamored with them. I hit high school and took a programming class my senior year. The teacher was new to programming, so she would give the assignments, and then I would help the first two rows of students and she would help the back two rows. This was when I learned that my true love was not the computer itself but helping people use a computer. I attended Baylor University where I earned a BBA with an ISY MIS concentration. While attending Baylor, I worked in the largest computer lab on campus and loved it. I liked the people I was working with, and I enjoyed the work. Incidentally, I met my future wife there, but that is a story for another time. After graduating, I went to work for the Electronic Library at Baylor. Don’t be fooled by the name; we were an IT department in charge of most of the student computer labs on campus. While working in the Electronic Library, it was reinforced in my mind that the part of the job I really enjoyed was helping others with technology…not necessarily the technology itself. When I left Baylor, I started working for Extraco Technology where I have been for the past 13 years. As with all jobs there are good days and bad days, but nothing has changed my mind. The part of the job that I enjoy most his helping people with technology.
