Teach a person to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. I have been blessed in my career with many that has come in my journey and taught me how to fish instead of giving me a fish. Since I left Microsoft in 2010, that is the journey that I embarked on, teaching people how to fish. Literally and figuratively. Throughout my career, there has always been opportunities for training and equipping others in my roles in IBM and Microsoft but it has always been through the lens of my job, my role and my goals. Honestly, it was more consultative than training. meaning I give them the fish rather than teaching them to fish. That to me has always been an easier path to take. I took the same approached in parenting, taking a prescriptive approach. How did that work out? Well, she turned out how I want her to be rather than developing on her strength. All that changed in 2010, it was not easy leaving a job after 15 years. (a story for another time over a beer perhaps). I started my journey as a trainer & facilitator and subsequently a coach to sales and pre-sales teams. Showing them how to fish based on their needs, their lens & not mine. Where am I after 8 years? The journey has taken me to different places and shaped me in various forms. It is still evolving as each day present different learning opportunities and skills that I incorporate in my training. The purpose has not changed. it is about teaching others to fish. Quoting Master sifu in Kungfu panda "not training you to be me, but training you to be you" The same principle I apply to social selling, solution selling, sales coaching etc. Teach a person to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. it has certainly made me a better and a better father. coachI have develop my own style and voice. Now I have found my purpose in helping others developed theirs.
