Primarly responsible for establishing the internal business systems and processes to support the $500 million redevelopment of the Auckland rail network, I was also responsible for several smaller planning and development projects. Projects included the construction of the Sylvia Park railway station, planning for the Marsden Point rail link, and planning for disbursed stabling yards for the Veolia rail units.

Transfield Services formed an alliance partnership with the New Zealand Railways Corporation (trading as ONTRACK) in 2002, providing engineering and maintenance services for the rail infrastructure, including track, structures, telecommunications, signals, and electrification. The contract was worth in excess of $100m annually, and employed more than 600 people.I was responsible for delivering support services to the Alliance, including purchasing and logistics, employee and industrial relations, occupational health and safety, risk management, quality assurance, and risk management. The most challenging and yet most rewarding aspect of the role was changing the attitude to health and safety - convincing people that injuries were not an acceptable occupational hazard.

Commissioned Engineering Officer, filling operational and support roles in Auckland, and policy and project roles in Wellington.During my 18 years service I was responsible for aircraft maintenance and servicing; quality systems and airworthiness management in engineering and software environments; strategic business planning; managing multimillion dollar technology intensive projects; and developing specialist policy for aircraft mechanical systems. I had a close associated with 5 Squadron during my career, spending time on the Maintenance Flight, Operational Software Maintenance Unit, and working for the Ministy of Defence during a planned upgrade of the Orion electronic systems in the late 1990s.
