Conducted an internal organizational review for an international NGO to evaluate the impact of a non-core activity on the agency and assess the feasibility of adding this new competency to their core deliverables. I identified key issues. 1. A significant number of their national staff had been impacted by the disaster to which they had responded. Many staff members were not performing well or constantly sick. I discovered the agency had never conducted post traumatic counseling for their staff. As a result, the issues they were now facing were psychosomatic responses to buried stress. 2. Confirmed they had met (new) donor expectations, but that their organizational finance structure was at risk because of their relationship with their normal donor. As a result of this finding, they added a Director of Development 4 weeks after the final report. 3. Acting on my recommendation, the agency began adding a Disaster Risk Reduction component to their program with the goal of better insulating their clients from financial loss in the event of future disasters. I later collaborated with some of their expatriate staff as lead author on a chapter that was published. Responsible for social services to desperate refugees, planning and executing food distributions to 650,000 people, advised UN, U.S. and European government donors on program issues and developments. Selected and trained Guinean, Liberian and Sierra Leoneans in logistical planning and execution, program planning and administration, proposal development and submission and communicating cross-culturally. Eliminated $6M per year in fraud and waste for UNHCR food distribution system.Coached and mentored key individuals in program leadership.Directed a staff of 250 operating in 6 distinct programs.Facilitated transformation of local NGO from unrecognized to a national force in country development. When the local NGO, a part of the only Protestant church in Guinea, first started their response to refugees, they were largely unknown in the country. A lot had to do with the majority of the country being Muslim. The church drew its adherents from the Forest Peoples, the lowest level of Guinean society. By the time I was done in the project, they were known nationally for the quality of their relief work. Their influence continues to grow to the point where the national leaders are consulted along with other national leaders during national emergencies (think coups).Represented UNCHR program to US State Department personnel. For 6 of my 7 years, I was the only American Project Director of a program that partnered with the United Nations High Commission for Refugees. Through my interactions with the various heads of sub-office for our region, I gained their trust and respect. When Food for Peace, Senate delegations and other US government officials came to evaluate the situation, I was asked by the head of sub-office to act as the spokesperson for all the NGOs & UN.
