Perkins Job Corp. Center.My view of being a professional counselor is based on Carl Rogers and Humanism. Rogers believed that the counselor must create the core conditions of genuineness, empathy and unconditional positive regard and this idea has become institutionalized in counseling. According to Rogers it is the therapeutic relationships mutually created by counselor and client that have the potential to heal in counseling. My approach to counseling is individualized depending upon the client and their situation. I use Solution Focused Techniques and I borrow from other theories such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Adlerian Therapy. Solution Focused Therapy is based on three primary premises or rules: 1) If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it, 2) If it’s working, do more of it, and 3) If it’s not working, do something different. Professional counselors are guided in their work with clients by the American Code of Ethics. The ACA states that counselors have a responsibility to practice in a legal and ethical manner. Ethical behavior involves the following concepts - respect for autonomy, beneficence, nonmalificence, justice, and fidelity. These concepts serve to not only guide us in our professional lives, but in our personal lives as well. Becoming a professional counselor influences the way I view my own relationships and choices in life. I strive to apply these concepts in my professional relationships with clients and colleagues, as well as in my personal relationships with friends and family. .
