We are designing digital and print tools to help teachers get all 9th and 10th-grade students to read complex text independently. The College Board is sponsoring high schools to implement the program and demonstrate measurable impact on reading and writing performance.

I supervised the work of a team of dozens of educators, designers, artists, media professionals, and writers who discovered which methods engaged all students in careful reading of complex text and clear, powerful writing in response to that text.My team created multiple products, the final one (still used), accepted for California adoption in the summer of 2015 included a complete ELD (English Language Development) curriculum, aligned with, but designed to be delivered separately from the core curriculum. In addition to creating the core and the ELD curricula, I supervised the development of an extensive digital library and research archives for independent reading. I worked part-time with the founding partners to develop an approach to reading and language standards, to write and refine Common Core reading and language standards, and to support SAP's work with the National Governor's Association and other national organizations to gain acceptance for the Common Core Standards. When the CCSS were released, I developed early curriculum exemplars for Achieve the Core and tested them in classrooms.

I expanded the non-profit nationally to serve hundreds of teachers and thousands of students at summer, after school, and professional development sites, including pre-service classes at Simmons College. I worked with other teachers to develop a daily writing curriculum, grades 3-6, for inclusion in McGraw Hill’s core ELA curriculum, Treasures, adopted in CA and Texas in 2008 and 2009. At the end of this period, I led a sale to and integration with Wireless Generation (which became Amplify after a sale to News Corporation). The Summer Program that had been part of The Writers' Express remained as a non-profit operating on the campus of Simmons College as Summer Ink. I worked with staff to test and refine The Writers’ Express Method while I expanded the non-profit to provide professional development for Boston Public Schools and create an after school program in a Boston Community Center. I expanded the Summer Program to an additional site at Simmons College. I strengthened the organization’s financial model by adding significant fee-for-service revenue as well as that from philanthropic sources.

I founded and directed a non-profit summer writing program in the Cambridge public schools and at Tufts University, bringing together teachers, writers, artists, musicians, scientists, and athletes to test and refine teaching methods while developing an innovative curriculum to serve hundreds of middle and high school students. I served a heterogeneous group of students from public and private schools, including both struggling and advanced students.

To support the school at a transitional moment, I supervised and evaluated faculty; I also led curriculum development across secular subjects.

I taught US History, Current American Issues, and Medieval History to Sophomores, Juniors and Seniors. I founded and ran an after-school program to provide academic support for students across disciplines. I was the advisor to the Young Women’s Leadership Club, running overnight conferences and follow-up programming.

I taught US and World History to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. While teaching at Fallstaff Middle School (that's the right spelling), I founded and ran an after-school program.
