I am a Neurology resident with growing experience in the study and treatment of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD), as well as research related to disparities in healthcare treatment. My clinical practice and research are focused on addressing the impact of socio-environmental disadvantages on cognition throughout the life course. I have a unique niche in medicine as a future behavioral neurologist because I will focus on addressing the structural and social drivers of health that impact healthy cognitive aging. I am particularly passionate about tackling the public health problems of Alzheimer’s Disease (AD) and vascular contributions to cognitive impairment (the sequela of uncontrolled cardiovascular and metabolic diseases), as these conditions represent a tremendous challenge in our society and disproportionately impact racial and ethnic minoritized communities, who are especially vulnerable to structural and social disadvantages.

Postbaccalaureate Irta FellowNational Institute Of Mental Health (Nimh) Aug 2015 - Jul 2016Bethesda, MdAs a Post-bac fellow through the Intramural Research Training Award program, I joined the Laboratory of Neuropsychology at the NIMH in studying existing technologies to map and modulate active neurons in non-human primates. I analyzed 3-D reconstructions of reporter gene expression from virus injections into the amygdala and orbital prefrontal cortex (OFC) of the rhesus macaque. We used technologies such as confocal microscopy, histochemistry and neuronal tracing in Neurolucida software to manipulate active neurons in non-human primates. The aim of this lab’s research is to better understand neural circuit connections and the mechanisms that underlie motivational behavior. -
Research InternHarvard Catalyst Clinical And Translational Science Center May 2015 - Aug 2015Center For Human Genetic Research, Massachusetts General HospitalThe Harvard Catalyst Summer Clinical & Translational Research Program (SCTRP) enables undergraduates to engage in a ten-week clinical and/or translational research mentored experience. My research examined the associations between neighborhood, school and state residential variability on risk for major depressive disorder using data from a large, population-based sample of adolescents. The goal was to advance our understanding of the roots and prevention of depression, and to clarify the barriers that exist to service access within a population suffering from disparities in care.

Student AssistantCornell Farmworker Program Sep 2012 - May 2015Cornell UniversityAs a student assistant in the Cornell Farmworker Program (CFP) office, my tasks included filing, updating and creating databases, and transcribing and translating interviews with migrant Latino farmworkers.Overall, the Cornell Farmworker Program strives to recognize the acceptance and full participation of farmworkers in their local communities. This mission is addressed through several activities, including Emergency Planning workshops to educate workers about their rights, on-farm ESL instruction, interviews conducted in Spanish to ascertain the needs of the community, and Focus Group meetings among farmers (the employers) and farmworkers to improve workplace relations. In addition to the administrative work I completed in the office, I occasionally assisted the Director of CFP with the aforementioned activities out on the farm.
