OPIS CEO Brian Crotty paid a visit to Sweden in 2007 and hired me to start a European branch of this successful US growth company. OPIS was privately held at the time and for the following nine years it generated consistent double digit growth before its acquisition by IHS Markit (INFO) in 2016.The challenge I faced was to break the near monopoly of the incumbent pricing agency, Platts. I built a high-calibre editorial team by enticing them from central London agencies into a virtual team, enabling those who wished to quit the city. Setting great store by innovation, we pioneered an offsite gathering of minds each Autumn and here we hatched a screen-based commodity trading and pricing platform, at a time when there was a buzz about exchange-like trading. We beat both our competitors to market by two years, and the platform went from 0 to more than a billion dollars of benchmarked trade. Living in a shipping community, where AIS vessel tracking was once first tested, I also launched for OPIS a Tanker Tracker system which led the field in accuracy. Tasked to build the OPIS brand in Europe, I organised street stunts, road trips, films and seminars, before founding an industry party that went from 25 to 250 participants and became a fixture atop the Hilton Park Lane at London's Petroleum Week.
